The tough-tackling midfielder has urged Houllier's underachieving stars to silence the critics by repaying the unwavering faith placed in them during 12 months of lacklustre displays.

Gerrard said: "As captain of Liverpool, I think some of the things which have been said about the manager have been totally unfair," he says ahead of today's trip to Manchester City.

"He's been getting battered left, right and centre. But it's down to us all to try and give him a bit of a breather. He has put his faith in us all and it's time now that all the players shared the responsibility between us. It is time for us all to stand up and be counted."

The Liverpool-born skipper has also reiterated his desire to remain loyal to his boyhood heroes after continued speculation surrounding his future on Merseyside.

He added: "Back in the summer, people were saying that if Liverpool don't achieve this or that, I'd be off ... blah, blah, blah. The same thing was said recently after I'd signed my new contract.

"I've signed a four-year deal and I'm committed to the club. Anyone who knows me knows how proud I am to be playing for Liverpool."
