Strurrock delighted with Saints start

Goals from forgotten England pair James Beattie and Kevin Phillips gave the fiery Scot a dream debut at the helm of the South coast side as opposite number Gerard Houllier's tenuous grip on power at Anfield slipped further.

"I think we rode our luck slightly. Our goalie has kept us in it.," conceded Sturrock.

"We started slowly today and made a slow start in our last home game, so I may have to change our build-up. But the attitude of the players was different class and we got a break or two.

"I'd like us to get as safe as possible as quickly as possible - then I'll have a look at the squad. The immediate aim is to collect points and climb the table."
