Sturrock hoping for Saints success

Sturrock, who left second division table-toppers Plymouth Argyle to replace fellow Scot Gordon Strachan at Southampton, is aiming to repeat the feat of bitter rivals Portsmouth in defeating the underachieving Reds.

Sturrock said: "We need points quickly because we don't want to be putting pressure on ourselves and we've got a fantastic opportunity against Liverpool.

"They are going for fourth place in the Champions League so we know we have to be mentally tough as well. But they lost to Portsmouth in the FA Cup and hopefully we can do the same."
