Sven hoping Stevie won't be Pole-axed

The inspirational Anfield skipper produced another all-action performance, scoring a sensational second goal as England looked set to cruise to victory in Austria, before being substituted as the plucky hosts earnt an unlikely 2-2 draw.

The 24-year-old had been rated only 50-50 to start last night's game due to a groin injury, but the beleaguered Swede is hopeful that his lynchpin will be ready to take to the field again in Poland.

Eriksson said: "Steven Gerrard is a bit tired but that's only natural after struggling earlier in the week.

"I took him off as a precaution and I am hoping it won't be a problem for him to play in Poland. He will be needed."
