UEFA had first revealed that no action would be taken against the player as previous footage from England's 3-0 success against the Swiss could not conclusively show whether or not Frei had spat at 24-year-old Gerrard.

New pictures from Swiss broadcaster DRS has, however, convinced UEFA that the Rennes hitman would face a possible suspension for his alleged spat with the England man.

With Italian playmaker Francesco Totti already serving a three-game suspension for spitting at Denmark's Christian Paulsen, Switzerland have ecided to make their key player unavailable for the must-win game with defending European champions France.

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said: "Have you seen the images? They were about as strong as they were in the case of (Francesco) Totti. If we feel there is a strong presumption of guilt, we cannot let him benefit from the fact he didn't tell the truth in the first place."
