The lottery was met by fierce opposition from critics in Thailand who felt the funding-effort would promote gambling amongst the many poverty-stricken residents of Thailand.

Shinawatra £65m bid for a 30% share in the Reds could no be in grave danger of collapse unless the controversial premier delves into his own pockets to purchase his two seats on the Anfield board.

Shinawatra said: "Taking money from the poor is not our aim.

"When we found that it is wrong, I had to put a break on it. We have to scrap the lottery project."
