Owen scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over Vitesse Arnhem, but although he's still two shy of Ian Rush's 20 goal European total the goal took him to 15 away from Anfield, a new record.

And Houllier described that record as 'phenomenal'.

He said: "It's good for Michael because he scored a goal and created lots of other chances.

"On another day he could have kept the match ball for a hat-trick, but he was important to us because we needed that victory.

"To score 15 goals away from home in Europe is astonishing. It's always a great performance to score and win away from home, and he has done that for us."
