The Diouf debate: The fans have their say

Last updated : 14 March 2003 By Gary Purvis
Here is just a small selection of the views given on LFC Online's forum following Thursday night's game:

Is he bollocks finished. He's a prick and the club need to come down on him like a ton of bricks but no way is that the end of his Liverpool career.
Al Campbell

Of course it isn't the end. Personally I think it was disgraceful. Not necessarily for spitting...but for the crap he and Liverpool will get for it. Totally took the shine off a great Liverpool performance. Diouf was the star...and villain. For 89 minutes he was superb. Celtic came out with wings (must have been the Red Bull) and Liverpool were nervous and unready. Credit to Celtic. Then Diouf showed Liverpool the way. He fought, and ran, and fought and ran. Brilliant...got everyone else kick started. Then he showed both defensive and attacking qualities. Unfortunately, that will be forgotten by everyone. Daft lad...

What Diouf did was an embarassment to Liverpool FC and the Supporters. I hope Houllier gets to see a recording of the incident tonight and can act swiftly to fine the player massively and hand him a self imposed ban for the rest of the season. This might seem too harsh to some people and not harsh enough by others. I think the guy has real talent and has been showing it more and more over recent weeks. Unfortunately he has undone most of that with this incident. He is definately too good to be chucked out the club. A ban till the end of the season imposed by GH will show the watching world that Liverpool FC will not tolerate not condone such behaviour. This incident could have serious repurcussions on the unique relationship between Liverpool and Celtic's supporters. Swift action now would show Celtic we are sorry for what has happened and hopefully it will blow over as quickly as it happened. The governing bodies may also be disuaded from taking action when Liverpool have already done it for them. It was a good performance by the team and Diouf in particular and its a shame that this is all the game will be remembered for.

What Diouf Did was uncalled for, maybe he was provoked but he is a professional footballer and should not react that way.It was an embarrassing incident especially because of the fact that we have a healthy relationship with Celtic and their fans.Diouf should be fined by LFC and will be fined by Uefa
Anybody remember the supposed West Ham incident, doesnt sound so far fetched now!
Shanks4ever

It was a stupid thing to do and he should be fined, but let's not overdo it, eh? The Carragher coin tossing thing must be worse, or at least as bad. Were people calling for HIM to be sacked? Diouf did yet a smack over the head and that idiot who did it should be punished as well. We can't have people abusing the players physically (I know it wasn't serious, but you have to draw a line).
Matjov

Is this incident worse than Carra slinging a coin into the crowd? i think not. i'm sure that a pound coin smacking you in the head can do alot more damage than a bit of spit. Of course he shouldn't be sold, just a fine & a few games ban is enough. There's more outcry about this than there was with the Carra Coin incident. Is this cos Hadj is foreign & not a scouser? Is this cos he's new to the team? I don't know. But at risk of sounding like a harry enfield sketch - calm it down!
Valleys Boy

I think I can safely say that El-Hadji Diouf proved himself to be a horrible t**t this evening, regardless of provocation he should never have spat into the crowd. I'd have had more respect for him had the turned round and clobbered whoever provoked him. Spitting in someones face is a disgusting thing to do. He's proved himself to be nothing more than a dirty animal in my opinion. It says alot about him as a person really doesn't it?
Chris Royle

What Diouf did was wrong. The provocations were also wrong. Physical and verbal abuses are always wrong. Scold him, fine him, suspend him. Make him apologize. Take him to court, if necessary (and along the way take the provocateurs along with him). Let him know the consequences of his action.
Gmerah

Made me ashamed to be a liverpool fan last night and spoiled what was otherwise a great night. Something needs to be done about these sort of incidents: Diouf diving (although i think that has been sorted now), Diouf spitting (did he do it to west ham fans aswell?????????), Gerrards tacle in the Everton game. I expect anyone I support to follow some basic human principals and not lower themselves to cheating or any bad sportsmanship. I also dont care if he was provoked (i dont think he was). I am prepared to give him another chance but hes got a long way to go before he gets my support again.
Clagadymuf

The initial response from the club is well reasoned and appropriate, we will have to wait and see if they take severe enough action. it's a great shame, a horrible incident exaccerbated by the fact that it came in a match which had been a credit to both clubs and sets of supporters. The incident left me as low as I had been high as YNWA belted out before the match. Fine him and remove him to the reserves for the rest of the season with some community work for good measure.
MarkW

He shamed himself and most importantly the club last night.A truely disgusting act. Such a shame aswell as he had been winning over a lot of fans (myself included) with his recent displays.
Marc

Whats important is that the guy has immediately come out and apologised after realising he made a massive mistake. It was a momentary second of madness and one that i am sure he is regretting. There were a few arrests last night, but they were all released. To me, it reminded me of a school playground the way he spat, he didnt look like he was pissed off or anything, i think he was joking, but he obviously doesnt realise how serious spitting is in this country. If Man Utd stuck by Cantona after he jumped in the crowd, then i think we should stick with Diouf.
Stevethesinger

He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy. I don't condone that and I would use the word 'disgusting' to describe it. He should be dealt with internally, however the club should stick by him. Yes, ManYoo stuck by Cantona, but how many of us on here can honestly say with hand on heart that when they saw that arsehole Palace fan sprint 50 yards down the stand to shout the most disgusting insults he could think of (in front of watching children) to a footbaler who had done nothing to him, and then received a damn good kicking for his trouble, some voice deep inside of us didn't briefly shout the word "YESSSSSS!!!". Come on, own up. I did. Spitting indiscriminately towards fans including children is different though, but not the end of the world. Punish him, let him regret and learn from his stupid action and then let him get on with his football.
