The kids are alright

With the likes of Hamann, Garcia, Hyypia and Cisse staying in Liverpool tonight's game is a chance for some of the recent Academy graduates to get some first team action and Benitez is confident the players he picks will not let him down.

He said: "My idea for this game is to give Mellor, Potter and Whitbread a chance. I have seen them in the reserves and it is important they have the chance to show they are capable of playing in the first team too. It is important for their future and ours.

"We have a good squad and when you see the amount of competitions you must play in each season, I want to use young players at some stage even though I must insist that we always want to win every match.

"But there is now an opportunity for some of the younger lads to play in the first team. I have decided to use all the squad, it is something I did at Valencia.

"I used all the players during the season and then when you arrive at the end of the season, everybody is in a good physical condition for the final matches.

"I have the same idea here. You cannot progress in all the competitions if you don't give everybody games. A tie like this will give the younger players more experience."
