The League may be priority, but Houllier has the polish to hand

The Reds face Vitesse Arnhem tonight after failing to come through Group B in the Champions League, but for both Houllier and the players in particular domestic success is far more important.

Nevertheless Houllier wouldn't mind another trophy after the successes of 2001, and has pledged (sic) that Liverpool will give their all in the 'Waffa' Cup. The Frenchman already has the polish to hand.

"The league is the number one priority.

"But every cup competition is a chance to bring silverware to the club.

"We are in a competition we won two years ago and we want to win it again, but I would by lying to you if I didn't say the Premiership was the first target for the players.

"They said that at the beginning of the season and I'm pleased about that because when you know what you want you are determined to do it.

"At the same time it's European competition where Liverpool has made its reputation and winning the UEFA Cup two years ago brought the club back to a very high level.

"The fact we are favourites to win the UEFA Cup tells you everything. This club wants to win trophies because this is the history and culture of Liverpool.

"I have no regrets about the Champions League now. We gave our all but it was not our season. We finished with eight points but it wasn't enough. Now we have to adapt our mind to the new competition."
