The Red Giant awakes

The smothering tension, the absolute fear as the clock slowly ticked down, the final moments of 180 minutes of top notch football...and then the giant awoke.

England's most succesful team stood up to be counted once again. It's been a long sleep but make no mistake: Liverpool are back.

The absolute determination which Rafa and his Redmen showed was inspirational. That wonderful strike by Sami Hyppia, the sublime effort of Luis Garcia. Jamie Carragher holding firm against Pavel Nedved. Xabi Alonso running midfield, Djibril Cisse's miraculous comeback. Moments that have formed this wonderful position we are in now.

And no matter of the result against Chelsea, what a run we've had. We've played the best and beaten them: We may not have the greatest squad, the most technically gifted or the most brilliantly minded, but you'd be hard pushed to find a team with more determination than the Reds showed yesterday.

And we do have the basis for the wonderful Red Giant to rise again to the heights of Shankly and Paisley. With players such as Morientes, Alonso, Gerrard, Cisse and Carragher, we have the basis to form something very special. And at the bottom of it all, there is the genius, the modest, the resolute Rafa Benitez.

Of course, noone is expecting this team to rise to those dizzy heights of 20 years ago just yet, but now, perhaps more than ever in the past decade, we can all see a golden future.

And when Mourinho and co. come to Anfield, there will be no doubt that the Redmen will once again rise and be counted. And after such a rest, this Red Giant is, make no mistake, hungry for success.
