The value of an England cap

Kirkland snr stands to win almost £10,000 pounds if the Liverpool shot-stopper takes to the field on Wednesday after placing a bet that his son would one day wear the three lions back in 1997.

"Chris's dad, who lives in Leicester, contacted us in January 1997 and placed a total of £98.10 at odds of 100/1 on young Chris, who was then just fifteen years old, growing up to win a full cap for England," revealed William Hills' spokesman Graham Sharpe.

"I think he had clubbed together with other friends and relatives to show their faith in the lad's ability and it would be great for them if the bet were to pay off when England, with Chris, who now plays for Liverpool, in the squad, take on Portugal on Wednesday night."
