Thommo: Do not write off the Reds yet

Phil Thompson insisted Liverpool's Champions League campaign is not dead and buried after a night of agony at Anfield.

The stand-in Liverpool boss watched in anger as Turkish giants Galatasaray used every trick in the book to frustrate Liverpool, who also had Steven Gerrard stretchered off after 75 minutes.

The Merseysiders could not find a way past Colombian keeper Faryd Mondragon despite creating a host of chances.

Thompson's side are adrift at the bottom of Group B, but are only three points behind leaders Barcelona with three games to go.

And Thompson said: "This group is extremely close and it will go down to the last game, when we play Roma at Anfield. It is not over yet by any means."

To add to the anguish, England midfielder Gerrard was carried off with a groin strain 15 minutes from time and is a major doubt for the weekend clash with Everton. The Reds failed to overcome the ruthless gamesmanship of the Turks, and Thompson added: "That was two points lost, not one gained.

"I can't fault my players, they were magnificent. We created more chances in this tie than we have done in a European match for a few years."

Liverpool now need a win next week in Turkey to maintain their slim hopes. But Thompson added: "We will have no fear away from home. They have seen how many chances we created and that may have a psychological effect."
