Thommo expecting tough test

Having seen off the threat of European minnows Olimpija Ljubljana, Steaua Bucharest and Bulgarian Cup holders Levski Sofia to book their place in the fourth round, Liverpool need to find their very best form to defeat a dangerous Marseille side.

Thompson said: "We're getting to the really difficult stage of the UEFA Cup now . It will be a difficult game against Marseille. They're a big club with a great history. We could have been drawn against someone a lot easier, but it's true to say we could have met even stronger teams too.

"It's coming around extremely quickly but we enjoyed the two Levski games and put in a great performance to get a great result in midweek.

"It will be nice for Gerard to return to France and there are some old adversaries in the Marseille team in Fabien Barthez, David Sommeil - who used to play for Manchester City - and Steve Marlet.

"There's still some work for us to do. A couple of decent performances don't make a season. And some of the things which have been going on off the field have been very disappointing to me as a Liverpool supporter. To say I'm upset is a bit of understatement.

"But now we're striving to end the season as well as possible by sticking together."
