Thommo expects Reds to gain revenge

Liverpool and Leverkusen meet in a re-run of the 2002 quarter-final early next year and Thompson is backing the Reds to emerge victorious this time around, although he concedes the task is not an easy one.

"Liverpool will have wanted that one, without a doubt but it won't be easy," he says. "When Leverkusen were drawn in the same group as Madrid, Roma and Kiev everyone thought they would be the whipping boys but they proved us all wrong.

"After getting to the final in 2002 they had a terrible time and were really struggling. Now they are back. They finished third in the Bundesliga last season, so they can't be taken lightly. German teams are always well organised and difficult to beat.

"With what happened two years ago when we lost to them in the quarter-final there will be an extra edge to this tie but I can see us getting through."
