Thommo expects title challenge

The former Liverpool captain and assistant manager believes Rafael Benitez has built a side capable of maintaining a title challenge this year.

"I am looking forward to the season because I think Rafa Benitez has put together his best squad yet," said Thompson.

"I think we may do something this year. A realistic aim is to win the league title - I mean that.

"People say we need to beat the top teams and yes, we do. The game against Manchester United on September 13 is our first chance to set down a marker in that respect. But when you talk about the top sides, there's only three.

"We drew against too many of the easier teams last season, particularly at home, so I think the most important thing is that Anfield becomes a fortress again. There wasn't too much difference between the top sides last season so if we do that then yes, we can win the league."
