Thommo staying positive

Gerard Houllier's underachieving Liverpool team must face an all-important UEFA Cup tie against Bulgarian outfit Levski Sofia with fierce criticism over the lacklustre defeat at Fratton Park still ringing in their ears.

Thompson concedes that Sunday's disastrous display against a side shorn of fifteen squad players is a bitter pill to swallow for all at Anfield, but he has called upon the Reds to raise their spirits ahead of this Thursday's third-round clash.

Thompson said: "We are all down and obviously everyone is very upset at going out of the cup. We gave the lads a day off yesterday to gather their thoughts. Sometimes it is good to have time to dwell on it so the lads have had 24 hours to reflect.

"Going out of the cup is always disappointing. I know from experience how it is when you lose a game like that. Everyone tells you you are absolutely crap.

"With the game live on TV everyone who knows football could see we could have played for 48 hours and still not scored. Sometimes games happen like that and it just had to be that day.

"At the same time I thought it was wrong of Harry Redknapp to say they deserved to win. They didn't. But we have to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and saying this always seems to be happening.

"We have to find out the reason why and put it right starting on Thursday. We have to stay extremely positive and I hope it is going to be Levski who feel the full force of our reaction.

"We have had too many of 'one of those days'. We had two games against Portsmouth and the tie should have been finished in the first game. But despite possession and chances it is just not happening.

"It is difficult to say whether it's confidence up front or lack of concentration at the back but there are a couple of things we need to work on.

"Now it is up to us to just get on with it. We'vegot to concenrtrate on the team and nothing else. We have got to ignore what's written in the press.

"Ourselves and the team are the most important people to get it right for the fans and the club
