Thommo tips Gerrard to lead England

After David Beckham's foolish admission that he got booked on purpose on Saturday in order to miss the Azerbaijan game, the FA are said to be considering his position as England skipper.

"Whatever happens with David Beckham, youth is on Steven's side, anyway," said Thompson.

"I think it was a silly thing for David to say - he's opened a can of worms with it - and it doesn't go down well in any football circles.

"I really think Sven Goran Eriksson will stick by him though and maybe he's right to do so. He seems to be a very loyal person. But I think it brings the day nearer for Stevie to become captain.

"I told Stevie that he would captain Liverpool one day and captain England. I don't believe it will happen now because Sven will rally round David Beckham and his troops because that's the way he is.

"But, for Stevie, I think it will happen sooner rather than later. I am sure he will take over at some stage.

"He thinks about what he says and doesn't make rash comments. He is growing and maturing all the time and really looking the part."
