Thompson backs Owen

The Liverpool striker has not found the net in the Premiership since scoring a brace against West Ham. Owen's troubles, of course, have been compounded by a similar slump suffered by the team.

Thompson, though, believes the England forward will soon be back to his best.

He said: "Michael went through a run like this earlier in the season and we said then it would be a matter of when and not if he started scoring again. He then hit a hat-trick at Manchester City. Hopefully another one of those performances from him is just around the corner.

"Of course we need him to be scoring, but it's not just about Michael getting the goals. We need to spread them around a bit more, and to be fair we were doing that earlier in the season.

"Michael is a top class player and he will be desperate for a goal to get him up and running again."
