Thompson backs Owen

The England forward missed a series of chances against Arsenal, compounding the pressure already heaped upon him over his much talked about gambling interests.

Liverpool assistant manager Phil Thompson, though, believes that Owen will soon regain the form that made him European Player of the Year.

He said: "Michael was getting in there. We had some great chances in that game to maybe even have been ahead of Arsenal at half-time."

"Michael kept them at full stretch. You could see the respect Sol Campbell and Cygan had for Michael. That was fully justified."

"The point is Michael keep getting in those positions. David Seaman made some brilliant saves. Michael was very unlucky not to be on the scoresheet."
