The 20-year-old striker, who has struck seventeen goals in as many games for the reserves this season, put pen to paper on a new three-year deal over the weekend. Thompson admits that Liverpool were eager to keep such a prodigious talent at Anfield.

Thompson said: "We're extremely pleased Neil has signed this extension. Neil's goalscoring record speaks for itself and he's been making steady progress under the guidance of Hugh McAuley, Alex Miller and, of course, Ian Rush. He's come on in leaps and bounds and is a tremendous prospect.

"Neil has probably been the most wanted player at the club in terms of the number of first and second division sides trying to take him on loan. But he's enjoying his football here and he's very highly appreciated."
