Thompson: Our display was full of positives

Thompson felt that it would have been a travesty if Liverpool had not recovered from Geremi's first-half strike to gain a point from the match.

He said: "If we had played like Middlesbrough do you think we'd have got any praise? Don't be saying they deserved anything. These days, if you win you are brilliant and if you lose you are rubbish.

"There's nothing in between. No-one looks at how the game was played and what went on. You are only judged on winning and losing.

"It would have been a travesty if we hadn't got anything from this game. There were so many positives for us."

Middlesbrough manager Steve Mclaren, seemingly bemused by Thompson's comments , felt talk of a travesty was unfair on his side.

He said: "I make no apologies for our game plan. We set our stall out to defend well and for all the talk of a travesty, Liverpool did not create many chances."
