Thompson: We need your support

Thompson believes it is wrong for fans to question the reign of Gerard Houllier after a run of eight games without victory.

Liverpool's assistant boss said today: "When we win a game people say we're great and when we lose they say we're rubbish. Not many people actually analyse what went on in the games, they just look at the result.

"The fans who have watched us over the last couple of months during our bad run will know we have been unlucky. We have suffered a tremendous amount of bad luck.

"Everyone wants success, that's only natural, and our fans want us to win every game we play. The real fans will stick by us during this tricky spell. We need their 100 per cent support more than ever."

Thompson added: "The real fans of this club know and understand what Gerard Houllier has done since he came here. Before he arrived there wasn't too much to be positive about.

"Look what he has done to change that. He has brought trophies back to the club. He has brought Champions League football to the club. We've beaten Manchester United five times out of six. We're unbeaten in quite a while against our other rivals Everton. We couldn't beat Everton for many games before Gerard came here.

"Don't let all of those achievements be pushed aside for the sake of six bad weeks. Gerard Houllier is the right man for Liverpool Football Club. All the players are behind him and all the staff are behind him. We will turn things around."
