The 22-year-old supplied an inch-perfect cross for Harry Kewell to head the Reds into the lead against Steve Bruce's side, and displayed the tireless running and boundless enthusiasm that had made him a Kop hero in his first season at the club.

With Riise set to be given a rare start against Premiership rivals Bolton in the Carling Cup tonight, Gerard Houllier has taken time to praise the attitude and desire of a player who has found himself out of contention for much of a disappointing campaign.
