Torres off the mark

Torres scored his first goal in the famous Red shirt yesterday as Liverpool beat Shanghai Shenhua in Rotterdam.

Yossi Benayoun's clever through ball split the Shanghai defence who tried but failed to play the offside trap and Torres was through one on one with the goalkeeper. He calmy lifted the ball over the keeper to put the Reds 1-0 up after 13 minutes.

Steven Gerrard made it 2-0 just after the hour mark, minutes after coming on as a subsitute. He received the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box, turned on it and scored a delightful chip into the top right hand corner of the net.

Sebastian Leto made his debut for the Reds and showed a willingness to take players on and get crosses into the box. He also formed an immediate understanding with countryman Emiliano Insua who was making his first appearance since winning the under 20's World Cup.

Lucas Levia made his first start for the Reds and looked impressive alongside Momo Sissoko in the centre although the quality (or lack of it) of the opponents must be taken into consideration. Feyenoord tomorrow will provide a sterner test.
