"He is not very well, and has also been kicked and punched in his head and chest, but may be out of hospital tomorrow," confirmed a police spokesman.
"At the moment we think he was injured because two groups of football hooligans met up.
"One of the large groups was Swiss and Gernam and one was English.
"They may have arranged to meet in Zurich, which is a long way from Basel."
A total of 19 fans were arrested by police.
