Uefa Cup success would make up for Champions League exit

The Reds agonisingly went out after a 3-3 draw in Basel, going through to the UEFA Cup by virtue of a third place finish in Group B.

But Diao believes that Liverpool's immense mental character will see them back to winning ways in no time.

He said: "We know we were unlucky in some of the games and everyone who saw the Basel match at Anfield in particularl would agree.

"But you can't win every game you play. We have only lost four games since the start of the season and some people are making out that it's the end of the world. If it's the end of the world for us then what are other clubs in the country thinking?

"The UEFA Cup is a good competition and if we win it then it will make up for the disappointment we all felt at going out of the Champions League."

"There is a good character and spirit in the squad and we will be winning again soon.

"Tonight's game is a big one for us. It's good that we play the first game away from home and if we do our job properly then I'm sure we can bring a good result back to Anfield for the second leg."
