The game was due to be played in Crewe but was switched to the Academy due to a waterlogged pitch. However, the Reds could not make the most of the unexpected home advantage and were beaten by a better Crewe side.

Many of the players seemed tired after the cup game at Anfield in midweek and it showed in the team's performance as a whole.

Coach John Owens said: "This was the aftermath of the Spurs game and extra time. With the young lads playing at Anfield as well it took a lot out of them and they were jaded.

"We conceded a very poor goal when our goalkeeper Paul Willis came out to the corner flag to clear a ball but kicked it straight to a Crewe player who scored into an open goal.

"We had chances but it was the usual story for us as we struggle to score goals and that's why we are bottom of the league."
