Vignal hoping to stay

Vignal, who spent his season on loan in La Liga, is well aware of what Rafael Benitez is capable of bringing to Anfield.

"He's the right man for Liverpool," said Vignal. "Tactically he is brilliant and I can tell you he has a very good reputation in Spain.

"I spoke to a lot of Spanish players last season and they all say he was the best coach in La Liga. He won the league twice in the last three seasons so that tells you everything.

"I think we need something new at Liverpool and he will bring new ideas. I think it would be great if we could play the same way as Valencia. They are very strong throughout but they take their time going forward. They may pass the ball around ten times at the back but then they will hit you very quickly. They're great to watch."

Vignal, who impressed in the left-back spot for the Reds before an injury against Grimsby curtailed his Anfield career, hopes the introduction of Benitez and his backroom staff will be a fresh start for him and enable him to continue his Liverpool career.

"I want to play for Liverpool and I'm hoping the manager sees a role for me here,"  said the French defender.

"We had a meeting on Monday when the manager presented his new backroom staff to us. He told us it was a new start for everyone. He said we must all work hard, train well and have a good team spirit. So far I have been very impressed with him. His appointment is definitely the best decision the club could have made. I just hope I have a part to play in his plans."
