Wales hammered

It was a disappointing first game as captain for Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy as Wales fell to their worst home defeat since 1908. The only consolation Wales can take from the game is that their performance was much better than the scoreline suggests.

Bellamy led by example as captain, leading the line well, getting in behind the Slovakia defence and even getting the ball into the back of the net only to see it wrongly ruled out for offside.

Unfortunately for Wales they made some vital mistakes and every one was punished by a ruthless Slovakia side. Goalkeeper Paul Jones, who played three games on loan for Liverpool, gifted the away side their second goal with a fluffed clearance and was caught wrong footed for their fourth. Defender Richard Duffy was too slow and allowed Svento to outpace him twice which resulted in the first and fifth goals.

Bellamy must now earn his spurs as captain by lifting an inexperienced Welsh side for Wednesday's game against Cyprus.
