Video footage failed to prove such a claim and Gerard Houllier later insisted that his defender had done no wrong.
"Neil does a good job at his club but at times he speaks too loud," said Houllier. "He said a lot of things which were wrong about us.
"I saw the incident. There was no spitting in his direction. Stephane was a bit angry and spat at the floor, thats all, but he did not spit at him."
