Tonge's two goals secured a famous win for the Brammal lane club, and Warnock believes Tonge would love to show the Anfield faithful his array of skills on a regular basis.

Warnock said: "I know Michael would love to play for Liverpool. They are a fantastic club but I reckon they should wait until the summer. At the moment they probably cannot afford him anyway.

"If we don't go up, perhaps it will happen. However, I must warn Gerard that if Sheffield United are promoted to the Premiership then Michael is going nowhere."

Reds boss Gerard Houllier admitted that he was impressed by the youngsters display, but remained tight-lipped over the possibility of any move for the player.

"Did he impress me? He scored two goals. We scout all good players in the First Division."

It seems clear that Tonge's trip to Anfield in two weeks time will not be his last.
