Welsh scores for England

This was Welsh's first start at this level and he capped his full debut performance with a cracking goal to put England on their way to a victory that takes them top of their qualifying group.

Both Welsh and Scott Carson played the full 90 minutes and impressed manager Peter Taylor.

Taylor said: "I am so pleased for Welshy to score and he deserved to, it was a great goal.

"It's a sign of the Premiership that you have got to be exceptional to get in there. You might have to be a Steven Gerrard - and there are not many of those around. But John has just got to be patient and keep working hard and he has got all the talent.

"There is no doubt about that and he is certainly helping our performances. His second-half performance against Germany on Friday was first class and tonight was the same.

"He reminds me of Jamie Carragher when I had him at Under-21 level - apart from the fact Jamie is six inches taller!

"It's good experience at this level for the players coming up against teams who play with different systems and in different ways."
