Whiskey drinker showing signs of sobriety

Despite the lack of media attention on Liverpool's magnificent start to the season, it seems as if not everyone is ignoring the progress made under Gerard Houllier this term.

Manchester United box Alex Ferguson has, shock horror, paid Liverpool the ultimate compliment by suggesting that Liverpool are now the team to beat.

With Liverpool leading the Premiership by a point from Arsenal, and six ahead of United, Ferguson has described Liverpool as a 'formidable' side.

He said: "It's easy for people to look at Arsenal all the time and forget about Liverpool who have shown great consistency and become a formidable team.

"They haven't had the same sort of projection as ourselves and Arsenal but now I really believe they're genuine title contenders. You can't dismiss their threat.

"Normally Gerard is very low-key about these things but he's been very positive about their chances.

"That tells you everything about the confidence they are showing."

That's nice of him, isn't it? But then again it's like one of those 'headgames' the Scotsman is reknowned for, attempting to heap the pressure on a perfectly functioning Championship challenge, and of course deflecting attention away from his own stuttering side.
