Whitbread will welcome new signings

Whitbread has played for the first team against Kaunus this season after Jamie Carragher was rested. However, if the Reds do succeed in bringing in a new centre-back Whitbread is likely to fall further down the pecking order at Anfield.

The American is not worried about any new signings though and says he will welcome the competition for places.

He said: "If there's competition for places then you might get a knock down but that might make you want to get back up and push even harder.

"At the end of the day, we're Champions of Europe and it's natural the team's going to want to buy big players and have big players in the team. You can't get disheartened about it. You've just got to keep showing what you can do and hope it's good enough.

"If you look around the whole team, there's competition for places all over the park. It's a long season, we're going to need a lot of players and the manager has to do what he feels is best for the club.

"The boss has said to all the players that it's going to be a long season and there's a lot of games to be played. He said he'll need all the squad to compete for places in all the competitions.

"It's a squad game at the end of the day and I just need to keep trying to impress the boss and hope for the step up. I hope I'll be involved a lot more times this season."
