Wilson: Kirkland needs to realise potential

The poor form of Jerzy Dudek and David Seaman means Kirkland could well inherit the number one shirt for both club and country. Wilson believes, if given time, Kirkland has the ability to be an outstanding goalkeeper.

Wilson says: "It can only be good news for England.

"All of us goalkeeping coaches have a huge opinion of Kirkland. He proved at Coventry, where he started out, and with the young England sides, just what a great potential he has.

"At this moment it is just potential, in the big picture. He does have real potential - but with a young goalkeeper you can only say it is that.

"He has played a few times in the first team at Liverpool, appearing in the Champions League, and has looked very sound and solid."
