Win when you're singing

Organisers of the inaugural Barclaycard Chant Laureate competition are searching for the creator of the football chant that best typifies the passion and wit of the game.

Up to now there have been more than 1,500 chant entries, with Liverpool supporters penning 415 despite recent poor fortunes.

The judging panel, chaired by the Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, will meet on April 27 to select the winner, who will be given a £10,000 bursary to watch games next season and compose chants.

Mr Motion said: "Poetry and football aren't often associated with one another, but these entries have the same sort of rhythmical energy, wit and zest that we find in certain sorts of folk writing."
