Wolves hit out at referee decision

The game fell foul to torrential weather sweeping across the Midlands that also claimed fixtures at Derby, Nottingham Forest and Premiership rivals Birmingham City.

Moxey, while sympathetic to the difficult decision faced by Knight, has made clear his belief that the sell-out match with Liverpool need not have been called off with just ninety minutes notice.

Moxey said: "We understand that the referee has a difficult decision to make but from what I saw of the forecast there is due to be no more rain this afternoon, although we have been deluged since around 5am.

"I can see why, at the time of making this decision, the referee felt the game couldn't take place but we feel that by 3pm the pitch would have been playable.

"It is very disappointing for everyone, particularly the near 30,000 supporters that were on their way to Molineux for the game.

"Everyone wanted to play, it was a big game for both sides and perhaps if officials had waited a little longer to carry out the inspection then it would have been a different story."
