MATCH PREVIEW

The last time Liverpool won at Molineux, courtesy of a single Alan Hansen goal, was back in 1979.

"We will reach our objective of finishing within the top four - we will be playing fewer games, so we should be more relaxed and have more energy" - Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel

Reds fans are enduring their own winter of discontent right now, with premature exits from the FA Cup and Champions League plus disappointing Premier League form.

Liverpool can still salvage their campaign by earning a top-four spot, but most fans feel investment is urgently required, especially given the injury problems afflicting Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. Yet it appears the club's American owners are reluctant to splash the cash, with Tom Hicks insisting January is a "poor quality market".

Hicks has reached an agreement to sell his Major League Baseball franchise, the Texas Rangers, for £310m, but it appears unlikely any of that money will find its way to Rafael Benitez. Co-owner George Gillett sold the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team last year for a similar sum but has not invested that cash at Anfield.

Wolves owner Steve Morgan, who attempted to buy Liverpool in 2004, says he has no divided loyalties yet admits he is saddened by the decline of his boyhood club.

Manager Mick McCarthy's team selection against Crystal Palace on Saturday drew murmurs of discontent at Molineux. The Irishman also fielded an under-strength side at Old Trafford last month but was ultimately vindicated when his side beat Burnley five days later.
