Worst injury crisis boss has ever seen

Twelve first team squad members have been out injured at one time or another this season. Djibril Cisse, Xabi Alonso and Florent Sinama-Pongolle are all out for the season while Steven Gerrard and Vladimir Smicer have both missed huge chunks of the season.

With Kewell, Smicer and Josemi returning to full fitness Benitez hopes the Reds are over the worst, but to the boss' credit he has never used the injury crisis as an excuse for a poor performance.

"In my time as a player and manager I certainly haven't seen the likes," said Benitez.

"In fact, the doctor at Melwood said to me that in 23 years he's never known anything like the amount of injuries we've suffered this season. I just touch wood that we are now over the worst.

"It's not my style to use injuries as an excuse for poor results and I'm not about to start now. True, we had had a lot of players injured but there's nothing we can do about that now. We just have to get on with things and make the best of what we have available."
