Danny Smith scored Liverpool's goal in the game, but an own goal from Adam Hitchen five minutes from time gave the home side a point.

"The boys deserve a lot of credit and did very well," Under-17's boss Dave Shannon told the club's official site.

"We played some controlled football at times and passed the ball well but Southampton were always dangerous on the break."
