'On The Spot' - updated (Friday)

In my opinion we are sending the wrong message out if we build a new stadium setting the initial capacity at 55k.

We can not afford to give the mancs 13,500 extra capacity for every home game. We will never compete with them in the transfer market unless we are bold and visionary now.

When we were champions of europe on a regular basis we could not cash in on the big money because of our ground capacity was comparable with that of many other clubs. Now with freedom of contract all around us it would make financial sense to me to plough most of our money into a development that will probably last us 50 years minimum. Let us hope the board show the same kind of vision like when they spent 12million on the academy, at the time 12 million could and still can buy a top class player, but the overall potential return will be shown to be better with the wise investement made.

I would like to see a minimum capacity of 65,000 but would wish for 80,000. We could give away generous amounts out to the opposing supporters thus maintaining anfields tradition of an unrivalled atmosphere. However with clever marketing I would expect us to sell out at most games.

OOOOH! JUST SAVED BY THE KEEPER!!!

But would we always fill it? I think there would be empty seats at many games and this would actually cool the atmosphere if anything. Attendances at several games last season were poor, even in the early stages of the Champions League. The majority of you will turn out when it's Everton or Man United but what about the smaller games? A regular moan from locals is that out of towners take their seats yet the majority of these locals can't even jump on a bus to see a smaller fixture where as out of towners will drive from one end of the country to the other to see the team play regardless of the opposition. I agree with your ambitions but making a dream a reality is a different thing all together.

People have been giving Heskey a lot of flak because of his recent performances for Liverpool and for England.

Although he does not score may goals he is a very unselfish and talented player who uses his strength to hold up play and create chances for other players.

Heskey has matured as player since his playing days from Leceister. I strongly tip Heskey to play a pivotal role in Liverpool's assault on the Premiership in the upcoming season.

Fans should get behind him amd the and realise that there is a lot more to his game rather than just scoring.

GOAL!!!

Emile Heskey is selected to play for Liverpool and England by two of the best managers in the world. It is easy to criticise a striker or forward who does not score goals because that is what they are usually employed to do but Heskey's role is more supporting than anything. Anyone that really knows their football will see what he offers. Most people just follow the ball during a game, they should pay more attention to things that are happening off the ball. He often creates the goals for Michael Owen or creates space for his team-mates. My only criticism is the amount of time he spends on the floor. He's too strong to be pushed around. If the Kop got behind him he will gain that extra confidence to destroy defences.

I just wanted to say how disappointed I have been with Emile Heskey not just for England but for Liverpool. He has such immense talent but wastes it by not putting 110% into his game we seem to get flickers of his ability but why can't we see it more often?

OFF TARGET!!!

See above!

Listening to all the rumours surrounding Houllier's promised big summer signing it would seem possible that there is a chance of either Lee Bowyer or Brett Emerton arriving at Anfield before the start of next season (both would be nice).
Both players are reasonably young but whereas Bowyer is a good player who can also cover the right flank I believe Gerard would be better employed signing the Australian (if possible) because he also is very versatile and a right wingback of equal ability to Riise (with Henchos, Hyypia and Babbel in defence) would offer a great option to the 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formations that Houllier has already established.

I think it's ok to say that the club are looking at these two players as options. Diouf is a world class player and he has already been bagged by the manager. Emerton and Bowyer are also very good players. I can't disagree with anything you say - a well deserved goal!

Watching Liverpool in recent years has made me think about the lack of goals created from wide areas.

When the Fowler/Collymore partnership peaked during the mid nineties, I remember that there were quite a few goals coming from crosses. I feel that before we can win the title again, this is something that has to improve.

This gets even clearer when we attack a side which keeps 9 men behind the ball.

GOAL!!!

The Fowler/Collymore partnership was a great one and I wish we could have seen it develop even more had Stan hung around longer! The current Liverpool team seems to fire the ball long and high up field if they can't find a route through which is something that used to drive me mad about Wimbledon! We need wide creative players but where are they all. Overmars would be a good signing.

Following on from your comments on great managers in your last update I thought I'd throw in my tuppence worth.

There can be no doubting GH's fantastic ability he is a master in the transfer market and has an amazing foresight into what is required where and when.

Who wouldn't have liked him to go out and sign Maldini 3-4 years ago for left back say Shevchenko for the forward line and Zidane for midfield? Realistically these players were never going to come to a side who at the time weren't in the Champions League. GH instead looked at his team bought players to do a job e.g. Song, Camara and a job they did. He also plucked Sami from virtual obscurity and bought Stephane a perfect foil for him. He got rid of the disruptive element which Ince was he replaced David James with Sander and bettered Sander a few years later with Jerzy. He has added quality since with Riise - has bought two terrific prospects in Diao & Diuof and done great business with Anelka - I tend to agree with you a contingency plan.

Compare that to Sir Alex up the road his first 5 years (GH hasn't even had that time) brought him one game away from the sack. The blooding of a group of youngsters whom he didn't buy - Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Butt, the Nevilles started his success. Name me a player Ferguson has plucked from nowhere to come close to the vast majority of GH's buys. Yes he bought Keane for a British record at the time everyone in the country wanted him. He bought stam for 10 million a record for a defender, he bought Veron for 28 yet has he brought Utd forward, most, myself, included think not. Pound for pound Peter Schmeichel was a great buy and yet to many still hasn't replaced him despite Barthez being his 4th attempt.

No one can take away the results of the last decade from UTD nor the astute if somewhat fortunate purchase of Cantona (most know the story of this). But I ask you, can any fan underestimate the magnitude of the success GH has made of his 4 yrs with us. Nothing short of the great mans health will stop us taking over the mantle of one of Europe's top sides again. I place both GH and Wenger way above Fergusons who without his coach struggled last season and showed a lack of knowledge in many of his tactical decisions. GH replaced our coach at the start of the season took an enforced 1/2 season break and still outdone AF with the help of a team he assembled on the pitch AND ON THE BENCH.

And he strokes home that penalty with ease!

I darent'y rule anything else. What a great email. Thanks for taking the time to say so much. You have clearly thought about this very much and wanted to get it off your chest. This contribution is something that people should be referred to when they start complaining during the season when a result doesn't go our way.

It's always good to see Gerard in the transfer market because unlike others, he doesn't makes mistakes aside from Ziege. However my fear is that young players are finding it increasingly difficult to break through. Traore, Wright and Vignal all need to get games under their feet this season in order to prove they can perform on the big stage. Other players such as Mellor should be given more of a chance then just the League Cup. We don't want to rush them but if given their chance for example in the FA Cup, they could go up against quality players but still be able to take their time in finding their feet. Finally, everybody around Liverpool is crying out for a winger, Duff being the most popular name being mentioned but we have other wingers not being given a chance, Barmby and Ritchie Partridge who needs to impress or face the axe.

Youngsters will be given a chance if they are good enough but I agree that sometimes they can not get that chance because of other players who are brought in above them.
