Peter Talbot - Let's go for the jugular!

Last updated : 08 March 2002 By Peter Talbot, Kop Talk
The natural starters would be Emile Heskey and Jari Litmanen but in a game we desperately need to win to stay in the competition, why not start Milan Baros too.

Heskey was impressive on the left, often wondering to the centre to form an attacking three with Owen and Anelka. Granted Newcastle don't have the best defence in the world but they found dealing with three strikers at once too much.

Barcelona also don't have the best defence in the world and following their moans that we concentrate too much defensively, I say we go for the jugular from the off.

Baros scored for the reserves on Wednesday and has waited patiently for his chance. Although he is highly rated, I doubt whether Barcelona will know too much about him and he may prove to be a secret weapon.

Liverpool had to win on Wednesday to stand any chance of winning the Premiership and, to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, we need to win next Wednesday too.

When it mattered, Liverpool came through a tough test on Wednesday. They were positive from the first minute to the last and Newcastle couldn't cope. Let's go for it again against the mighty Barcelona. After all, we have nothing to lose.

On a separate matter, Anelka's performance on Wednesday filled me with excitement. Not only is he a class act, but he looks proud to wear the red shirt and his enthusiasm and work-rate has impressed me as I did not think he had it in him.

The more cynical of people will say he is playing for a move. But as long as he is enjoying playing for the club, who cares. He is a class player and just the sort of invention we need in the team at the moment.

My message to Gerard Houllier: SIGN HIM UP!!!
