Peter Talbot's review of 2001

BEST RESULT OF 2001

The home defeat of Barcelona comes close but the win in Rome just edges it for me.

Beating Roma gave Liverpool the stepping-stone to go on and conquer Europe.

This result showed the rest of Europe how good Liverpool were and set them on their way to win the UEFA Cup.

MOST IMPORTANT RESULT OF 2001

In a year of dramatic Cup Finals and superb league victories, for me the most important result of the year was the 2-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup fourth round.

Having lost the previous meeting 4-3, had Liverpool gone out of the Cup they may have seen their season slowly fall apart after what would have been a damaging defeat. Instead, they won this game and went on to lift the trophy.

.
MOST ENTERTAINING GAME OF 2001

The UEFA Cup Final against Alaves has to be the most entertaining game involving Liverpool since the famous 4-3 victories over Newcastle.

Nine goals, two red cards, a last minute equaliser and an own-goal golden-goal.
What else could you ask for?

BEST MOMENT OF 2001

Gary McAllister's 44-yard effort in the dying seconds against Everton comes a very close second but Michael Owen's dramatic Cup Final winner against Arsenal was the best moment for me.

Michael dragged Liverpool from the depths of defeat with two goals in the last eight minutes that still brings a great feeling to all Liverpool fans.

BEST GOAL OF 2001

McAllister's derby goal came second in the Best Moment category but first in best goal. He showed brilliant vision to beat the Everton goalkeeper from 44 yards and beats Steven Gerrard's strike against Manchester United - just.

PLAYER OF 2001

You can't look further than the European Player of the Year, Michael Owen. His goals have been priceless in a brilliant year for Liverpool and England. Without him you wonder if any of it would have been possible.
