Liverpool kept their flickering title hopes alive with a draw at leaders Arsenal in a game of two penalties.

Danny Murphy gave Liverpool a 70th minute lead after Sol Campbell brought down Milan Baros. Thierry Henry levelled nine minutes later when John Arne Riise fouled substitute Francis Jeffers.

Arsenal are five points ahead of second-placed Chelsea and nine clear of Liverpool with 17 games to play.

Liverpool have not won in nine Premiership games, but midfielder Steven Gerrard saw the draw as a turning point. He said: "We needed something here. It was important not to lose.

"Arsenal were miles better than us in the first half, but we stuck together and we could have sneaked it at the end. Now we're unbeaten in four games and we can build on this result." Arsenal defender Campbell said: "I think we had the better chances. They defended well, then we got a bit sloppy in the second half and let them back into it. But we're still in a very strong position and we need to go on from here." Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland rescued Liverpool with saves from Sylvain Wiltord, Campbell, Henry and Robert Pires as Arsenal dominated the first hour.

The visitors then grabbed a surprise lead when Gerrard's through ball split the Gunners' defence and Baros fell under Campbell's challenge.

Penalty taker Michael Owen had already gone off with a hamstring twinge, but Murphy kept his nerve superbly to beat David Seaman.

Jeffers had been on for barely two minutes when he spun on to Dennis Bergkamp's pass and tumbled as he edged past Riise. Henry gave Kirkland no chance from the spot.

Gilberto Silva wasted a glorious chance to clinch three points for Arsenal in stoppage time, shooting wide of a gaping net after Ashley Cole found him unmarked at the far post.

Owen played for only 33 minutes, but is expected to be fit again within a week.
