Liverpool netted their first victory of the season in a tremendous 3-0 win over arch rivals Everton at Goodison Park in the 169th Merseyside derby.

With Gerard Houllier side's only picking up two of the available nine points, Reds fans held their breaths in anticipation while David Moyes was gunning for his first derby victory.

Everton had the upper hand for the first 30 minutes as Wayne Rooney had his first chance in the seventh minute, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Two minute later Toffees striker Tomasz Radzinski took the ball from the half-way line into the danger zone. But to the relief of visiting keeper Jerzy Dudek his shot just slid past the left post.

In the 23rd minute the crowd cried penalty when Croatian defender Igor Biscan tripped Radzinski in the box, but the whistle didn't go and play continued.

The game heated up in the 39th minute when Liverpool star striker Michael Owen took the ball from Everton's Alan Stubbs and netted the first goal of the game.

A determined home team tried desperately to change the score before the half-time whistle. But even a 42nd minute Rooney strike couldn't alter the scoreline thanks to an excellent save from Dudek.

Seven minutes into the second half, Czech international Milan Baros was covered with defenders in the box so passed back to Owen who then scored his second goal.

Three minutes later it looked like the Toffees had got one back when Dudek dropped a clumsy save into the net, but after the keeper claimed he'd been pushed the referee disallowed it.

In the 80th minute Everton's dream of their first derby win this century disappeared.

Keeper Steve Simonsen left the goal to stop Owen netting a hat-trick. But he sent the ball over to new signing Harry Kewell who hammered it into an empty goal, scoring his first, and three points, for Liverpool.
