A last-minute goal from Liverpool against visiting Chelsea meant the Reds stayed second in the Premiership, just two points behind Arsenal.

Star striker Michael Owen finally managed to pierce the impressive Chelsea defence in the 89th minute, winning Gerard Houllier's side a crucial three points.

The Londoners played a skilful first half and their earliest chance to score came in the 11th minute when Gianfranco Zola hit the ball just wide of the net after a Stephane Henchoz foul outside the box gave him a free-kick.

Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini was not tested until the 38th minute when the Reds had their first real attempt at goal.

Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia caught a Steven Gerrard cross and sent a 35-yard shot towards the net that Cudicini only just managed to save with the tips of his fingers.

Chelsea were still dictating the match in the second half but recent Reds signing Milan Baros breathed new life into the game when he was brought on for Bruno Cheyrou in the 70th minute.

A minute later the Czech player carried the ball skilfully through midfield to pass to his strike partner Owen before finishing off the manoeuvre but sent the ball just wide of the net.

In the 78th minute Baros made another attempt to score the first goal of the game when he stole the ball from Chelsea captain Marcel Desailly, powering up the right flank but again sending it just past the goal.

In the 89th minute Salif Diao's ball found Liverpool striker Emile Heskey and he carried it into the box.

But his attempt hit the post and was picked up by Owen who sent the ball into the back of the goal to secure a nail-biting home victory
