Liverpool are on the road to the Millennium Stadium for the Worthington Cup final after two home goals gave them a 3-2 aggregate win over Sheffield United.

The Reds will face Manchester United or Blackburn Rovers in Cardiff when they battle to win their seventh cup.

Liverpool started the semi-final 2-1 down on aggregate, but after just eight minutes El Hadji Diouf evened the score and it was an extra-time goal from Michael Owen which clinched the deal.

The Reds' star striker Owen gambled on a shot from just inside the box on eight minutes, but it rebounded off the visiting keeper Paddy Kenny.

Unfortunately for the Blades the ball fell at the feet of Emile Heskey and then to Senegalese international Diouf who put it straight into the back of the net from 20 yards.

In the 14th minute the first division team had the chance to score when midfielder Michael Brown headed a Phil Jagielka cross towards the goal. But the Reds' quick-witted keeper Chris Kirkland easily dealt with the challenge.

Two minutes before the full-time whistle Neil Warnock's side had another chance to get through to their first ever Worthington Cup Final after Kirkland fouled Wayne Allison just outside the box.

While the keeper was shown a yellow card, Tommy Mooney took the free-kick but it flew wide of the post and the semi-final crept into extra time.

But in the 107th minute more than 40,000 Liverpool fans chanted Gerard Houllier's name after Owen netted his side's second goal of the night and sealed a place in the final.

The 23-year-old received an excellent Steve Gerrard ball and coaxed it into the near deserted Blades box, before lifting it past Kenny.
