Bolton secured a stunning 3-2 victory at Anfield as the Trotters beat Liverpool to win a place in the last eight of the Carling Cup.

Sam Allardyce's side made an explosive start by taking the lead in the third minute when Youri Djorkaeff's corner was headed home by Mario Jardel.

Liverpool hit back well and John Otsemobor's cross was almost turned in by Anthony Le Tallec.

Bolton almost doubled their lead when Jay-Jay Okocha fired just wide before the Nigerian forced a fine save from Jerzy Dudek.

At the other end Danny Murphy's free-kick skimmed the crossbar but the Reds trailed at the interval.

Liverpool continued to dominate after the break and Emile Heskey's 52nd minute header was cleared off the line by Ivan Campo before Murphy headed home the equaliser 14 minutes later.

Henrik Pedersen had a 'goal' controversially disallowed for handball before Okocha fired a 25-yard free-kick home to restore Bolton's lead.

A fantastic 88th minute strike by Vladimir Smicer looked to have taken the game into extra-time but a mistake by Salif Diao handed the visitors the win.

The Senegal midfielder brought down Kevin Davies in the box and Djorkaeff blasted home the spot-kick.
